Indiana Hoosiers Tickets – Hoosier Basketball Seeing Red | ArticlesBase.com

Published by admin | Filed under Education

It's been one heck of a year for the Indiana university men's basketball program. Former IU head coach Kelvin Sampson's illegal recruiting tactics left the Hoosiers completely overturned after last season's scouting scandal, bringing about the winds of change to Assembly Hall that followed Sampson's boot. Standout player Eric Gordon turned in his red and white jersey at the end of last season in exchange for No. 10 gear with the NBA's L.A. Clippers, DeAndre Thomas left IU for NAIA team Robert Morris, Eli Holman left for Detroit, Armon Bassett departed for UAB, Jordan Crawford for Xavier and Brandon McGee exited IU's roster for Auburn, leaving IU with a fresh new crop of freshmen to go along with first year Hoosier head coach Tom Crean. When push comes to shove, Sampson's damage has been huge and thoroughly detrimental to the flailing IU men's basketball team, yet despite current hoops Crean and his team have to jump through because of Sampson, this Indiana team still has hope for the near future.

Crean, named IU's 28th head basketball coach in IU history last spring, took over for Sampson's crumbling empire with sticky restrictions, not the least of them being a three year probationary period for the Hoosiers. The team also has to comply with a reduction of one men's basketball scholarship, a reduced number of off-campus recruiting days, limited opportunities available for staff to recruit high school players, a decrease in paid visits and a bad reputation to overcome. The NCAA announced these sanctions and restrictions for the Hoosiers last week as the result of Sampson's actions, but Sampson didn't get escape without penalty, either. The former head coach for the Hoosiers will probably not coach college basketball anytime soon, as the current Milwaukee Bucks assistant got slapped with a five-year show-cause punishment by the NCAA for “extremely serious” recruiting violations that will bar any recruitment of high school players from 2008-2011 and drastically limit any contact he could have with players in 2012 and 2013.

Meanwhile, the Hoosiers are busy chipping away at their current roadblock, building up the red-hot IU dynasty one game at a time. Crean's inheritance to the men's basketball program includes just one returning scholarship player, and this year's team is also comprised of five walk-ons, five scholarship freshmen and two junior college transfers. The Hoosier babies started their season out this year with an 83-65 win over Northwestern State, following it up with a 60-57 victory over the IUPUI Jaguars before getting blown out of the water by Notre Dame (88-50) and St. Joseph's (80-54) in the Maui Invitational. IU's 38-point loss to Notre Dame is the team's largest margin of defeat in over 10 years, but Crean and the Hoosiers will continue to plow their way through this season of new beginnings, establishing the base to a strong IU basketball empire to come.
