High School Home Schooling Field Trips

Thinking back to high school, there’s a good chance that some of your most enjoyable school days were the one’s where you went on a high school field trip. This enjoyment came not necessarily because of the field trip, or it’s destination, but because you got out of going to class for at least a portion of that day.

Home school field trips are different. They are planned by the parent, or jointly planned by the student and the parent. These trips are more inclined to meet the individual interest of the student. The problem comes with deciding just what field trip opportunities are available to a home schooled student.

This problem is easily solved with a little imagination. There are numerous field trip opportunities available to high school home schoolers. There are those that are considered traditional such as a trip to a museum, an art gallery, an amusement park, or even a visit to a college campus. There are also volunteer-related field trips such as visiting a nursing home, or hospital.

Live in or near a big city? Large cities offer countless field trip destinations. How about a trip to the theater, or a factory tour? Businesses in the food industry may offer a hands-on opportunity giving students exposure to the possibility of a career in their industry. Food manufacturing plants, bakeries, and even large restaurants can be very willing to expose a student to their career opportunities.

There are many wonderful extended theme camps all across the country available to home schoolers. A small sampling of these would be computer camp, space camp, music camp, and many more that may be of interest to your home schooled student. While these extended camps may not be free, many will provide need-based scholarships.

How about a cultural tour of any large city? Atlanta, Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Boston, and Nashville are just a few of the interesting choices available. The learning experience provided by this type of field trip is priceless.

Whatever you decide, remember to give your high school home schooler several options. Let the student research just which city they would most like to visit. This will generate more interest in the destination, and more interest will mean more learning, and a good time for all. High school home schooling can provide field trip opportunities that will equal or exceed anything a public school has to offer.
