The Bigfoot Mystery Will Never Be Solved
Published by admin | Filed under Education
Why can’t we solve the mystery?
I’ve heard researchers say they think the Bigfoot mystery will be solved in their lifetime. We teeter on the threshold of a great discovery which will bust open the doors of science and secure the Sasquatch’s place in the annals of biology. I hear a similar mantra from UFO researchers: soon the government will disclose all it knows about UFOs and the mystery will find its ultimate resolution.
Neither event has happened yet. I will hurl myself out on a limb here and make a prediction: neither event will happen, ever.
Only one type of evidence has the muscle to settle the debate over Bigfoot’s reality. That evidence is a live specimen or a carcass. First of all, no one’s going to capture a live Bigfoot. Sightings suggest these creatures have great strength, agility, and cunning. We have enough trouble capturing animals that everyone agrees exist, like rhinos and big cats. Imagine trying to snag an animal that has the intelligence of a human, the strength of an elephant, and the agility of a cat. It’ll never happen.
Even a carcass would fail to end the debate. Debunkers can always spin the facts to suit their needs, claiming the carcass is fake. Besides, I’d bet virtually any scientist would look at the body and pronounce it fake even if he thinks it’s real. A dead Bigfoot raises legal issues. Have you killed an endangered species? Is it human enough to qualify as a murder victim? If you miraculously found a carcass—say roadkill or natural death—then you would need some kind of proof you hadn’t offed the beast yourself. The legal entanglements alone could incite a scientist to denounce the body regardless of what the scientist really thinks about it. Besides, nobody wants to overturn cherished theories about the natural world.
The mystery will never find a solution. I don’t research Bigfoot because I want to prove the species’ existence. I research the subject because it fascinates me. I love learning, and I love a good mystery.
I don’t need to solve it.

Lisa A. Shiel is the author of Backyard Bigfoot: The True Story of Stick Signs, UFOs, & the Sasquatch, a ForeWord Magazine 2006 Book of the Year finalist. Critics have praised Backyard Bigfoot, saying “[it] is as informative as it is entertaining” (Midwest Book Review), “[it is] one of the best types of investigative reporting I’ve seen” (Reader Views), and “you may agree or not with her conclusions but you will be entertained by the discussions” (The Mining Journal, Marquette).
As a recognized Bigfoot expert, Lisa has been interviewed by big-city newspapers, drive-time talk radio hosts, local and national magazines, and TV reporters. In 2005, she founded the Michigan Upper Peninsula Bigfoot Organization (MUPBO) to explore all aspects of the Bigfoot phenomenon, from sightings to evolution to UFOs. Lisa has a master’s degree in Library Science. She currently pens a blog, Bigfoot Quest, as a companion to the MUPBO site.
