Smarter and Happier

Published by admin | Filed under Education

New research suggests that running may actually make you smarter. A study done in Germany found that people were able to memorize facts and learn new words about 20% faster after running than before they ran.

It seems that exercise stimulates the production of certain chemicals in the brain, called neurotrophic (literally, translated as brain-feeding) factors, which help with memory formation, analytical thinking and computation of problems. So a run before work or study might improve your productivity.

Whether you're at school, university or just need your thinking cap firing on all cylinders, you now have another reason to run.

That, of course, is in addition to all the other mental/brain benefits, including the famed runner's high. Best of all, this mood-effect is long-lasting. So long-lasting, in fact, that another study from 2007 showed that people who had been diagnosed with major depression could be treated just as effectively using exercise as anti-depressive medication. This effect became better and better over time, meaning that exercise is the best long-term method for lifting mood.

So memory improves, mood improves, and we haven't even started discussing the physical benefits. There's more to running than meets the eye.
