Want To Write A Book? Begin With A Blog (part Two)
Published by admin | Filed under Writing and Speaking
In the last article, we talked about the natural synergy that can be created between writing a book and writing a blog on the same topic. Writing a blog is just simply a better and faster way to get your book written.
Not only does blogging help you write about your subject in small, daily posts; but because of the comment features of blogs, they also engage your readers to help you write your book with you.
Readers’ comments will give you examples, testimonials and new insights as you move forward.
Now, in this article, we will talk about how to draw pre-publication interest in your book and how to build your audience BEFORE your book is published.
Your blog, and your yet-to-be-written book, are not in a vacuum. Let’s face it, if there are no other books or blogs on this topic, you should give serious consideration about whether there is market for your book/blog to begin with.
But don’t make the mistake of regarding these other writers on your topic as competitors. These people are experts too and you can site their material, comment on their blogs or write reviews of their books in such a way as to attract more interest to your own blog and book.
Here’s how:
First, read other blogs on your topic and submit comments. If your blog has a trackback feature, you and that other blogger can actually engage in an ongoing conversation on a topic that began with a post written on that other blog. These trackback conversations create new traffic for both blogs and are often the most widely read posts out there.
Keep the dialogue professional even if you have sharp disagreements on the topic. Mild controversy stimulates readership for both of you, but mudslinging will not win you any friends or readers.
Second, go onto Amazon.com and find other books on your topic. Write reviews on these books with links back to your blog or a recent post on your blog.
Finally, don’t neglect the opportunity to write articles for article bank sites like ezinearticles.com. These sites not only give you exposure, they also give you links back to your blog and draw new readers.
The point of all these linking strategies is to create a readership before you get your book published. After you get your book written, the next big hurdle is getting it published. By establishing a readership before your book is completed, you will find tow things:
One you will find publishers will be much more ready to listen to your proposal if you can tell them you have x number of visitors coming to your blog each week
And two, these visitors, who have watched your book take form and who have submitted their comments and ideas, will be the first buyers of your book.
In the next article in this series, we will talk about how to use your blog to begin networking with agents and publishers as your book is being written.
