Want To Write More Articles? Go Out For A Walk

Published by admin | Filed under Writing and Speaking

As I write more articles, I find that my most important tools are, my computer, my hand-held digital voice recorder, and … my walking shoes.

Here’s my daily routine: I turn on my computer and open up as many Word windows as I need to capture whatever article ideas are floating around in my head. I am learning to not try to write one article at a time, but to embrace the fact that my mind churns up random ideas on all sorts of topics all the time.

So I open up a different Word window for every possible article topic that comes to mind. I work on what I have at the moment, but I don’t stress to complete any one article, yet.

When I hit a stopping point, I grab my tiny RCA Digital Voice Recorder and put on my walking shoes and hit the sidewalks.

Now my body is moving, I am getting exercise (something I would want to be in my daily routine anyway), and I am breathing in that wonderful fresh air.

And the ideas start coming to me. Each idea I have gets captured on my digital voice recorder and I keep walking. More ideas come to mind, either on the topics I started at home, or new ideas for new articles pop into my head (and immediately get popped into my recorder).

When I come back home, I am ready to sit down at the computer again. I’ll add to the articles I already started and complete many of them with the ideas that came off my recorder. I’ll also open up new windows to start the new articles that came to mind as well.

Your body and mind are connected. Your writing time will sometimes be better spent when you are not sitting at your computer, but moving and exercising your body. For some reason, walking works best for me because it does not require that I concentrate or focus my mind on the exercise itself. That leaves it free to help me write more articles.
